Barry Wanderers 1st XI vs Blackwood 1st XI
On Sunday, Barry made the trip to Blackwood knowing they were up against a team five divisions higher than themselves and who had skittled Cardiff out in the first round. It was a beautiful day and the ground was looking fantastic, although the wicket a little damp after Saturday’s torrential rain. Blackwood won the toss and chose to bowl against their lesser opponents, Gareth Lanagan and Anthony Barratt strode out to the crease. After a nervous start against some rapid bowling Lanagan started to show his class and played some aggressive classy strokes to start finding the boundary. Barratt fell to a good delivery bringing old timer Mike Denning to the crease; he made an immediate impact playing some fantastic strokes amidst the continuing rise of the proverbial Blackwood eyebrow. Denning was unluckily bowled for 26 off one that seamed in bringing in skipper Stuart Jones to partner Lanagan. Barry were going great guns at 81-2 off just 23 overs when Lanagan was caught and bowled for a classy 35. Owen Johnston entered the fray and together he and Jones hit 70 off just 12 overs to cause Blackwood’s eyebrow to meet the hairline and panic started to set in when 220 was suddenly looking viable. However Johnston and Jones were both caught in the same over to extinguish the run rate and bring in the lower order. The opening bowlers returned and skittled through the Barry lower order to leave them on 178 all out; a very respectable score on a damp wicket against a superior side. After a fantastic tea, Barry took the field in high spirits and Khan took the new ball. He immediately had the opening batsmen hopping about with his pace before injuring himself in his third over. This was a massive blow to Barry and though they endeavored to take wickets and restrain the run-rate, Blackwood eased home in the 41 st over, though a late rally from Jones taking 2 wickets and with Andy Fenton and Barratt bowling particularly well it was not enough in the end. A fantastic day was had by all topped off by the Blackwood players and the neutral umpires acknowledging Barry’s effort and talent. Barry Wanderers 1st XI vs Blackwood 1st XI Summary
