Barry Wanderers 1st XI vs Dinas Powys 1st XI

The Wanderers arrived at the Common in determined mood following Saturday’s league defeat, knowing the winners of this game would be given a tie against either Blackwood or Cardiff.

Dinas captain Steve Bussell won the toss and put Barry in to bat on a damp cloudy day with the wicket promising some surprises. Barry started disastrously, losing wickets in the first 14 overs to leave Barry on 36-4. Pete Coleman and Stuart Jones then steadied the ship a little only to lose Coleman to a plum LBW. The returning Richard Johnson came to the crease and played a wonderful supporting role to frustrate the Dinas bowlers and bring Barry to a respectable 190-9 scoring 42 along the way with the ever reliable Jones scoring a valuable 24.

The Dinas innings started brightly with the score on 50-1 with Ajazz Khan bowling with ferocious pace and claiming the important wicket of Gordan Hannah with Jamie Keir catching down the leg side. James Hassett left the field with a suspected broken toenail; Mark Ellis entered the field to replace the crocked bowler.

The match then turned into the Fenton-Keir show, as Andy Fenton combined with Keir to dismiss three batsmen in four balls, with two catches and a stumping in an inspired spell of bowling from Fenton. Keir was in magnificent form claiming another stumping of Jones to finish with five dismissals and Dinas were teetering on 60-5. Jones claimed another two victims and along with Anthony Barratt and the returning Khan, the Wanderers demolished the Dinas innings leaving them decimated on 88 all out. A truly wonderful bowling performance by everyone concerned and a superb win to send Barry in the next round.
