Great Western 1st XI v Barry Wanderers 1st XI Barry traveled to Bridgend knowing they needed to win if their promotion hopes were to be realised in a very open division. An important toss was lost by skipper Stuart Jones and the Wanderers were put into bat on a very damp track. Geraint Davies swung the ball superbly for the valley side with new ball, culminating in catching Jones in front LBW without troubling the scorers. At the other end Gavin Flower was bowling with fine pace and Barry were soon struggling against the attack. Luke Harris got bowled by one that kept low bringing Ben Irons in who looked good before caught at cover on the drive. Young Kyle Offer and Andrew Ferguson soon followed as Kevin Williams and Flower were running riot for Great Western with the ball. At 37-6 Barry were looking shaky to say the least, but stalwart Ed Sherriff and Richard Johnson produced a valiant and courageous stand of 62 to steady the ship somewhat as Barry were eventually dismissed for 102, Johnson scoring 29 and Sherriff 32no. Kevin Williams was again the main man for the valley men taking a frugal 5-19 from 10.3 overs. Jones and Ferguson opened the bowling for Barry, aware that early wickets were vital and a very attacking field set. They both bowled with good pace and line, beating the bat on many occasions but the elusive breakthrough did not come until change bowler Johnson saw a drive caught by Offer in the covers; a quite magnificent 'Collingwoodesque' one handed effort that had the Wanderers in raptures. Kevin Williams then however took control for Great Western, smashing anything loose mercilessly to the boundary, and scoring 42 before getting caught. The damage was however already done, and though James Hassett took three quick wickets, and Krunel Patel took a further two, Great Western eased home to win by 4 wickets in the 25th over.
