Barry Wanderers 1st XI vs Great Western 1st XI

On a scorching summer’s day at Hayes Point, Great Western won the toss and surprisingly asked Barry to bat on a flat wicket. Gareth Lanagan signaled Barry’s intentions from the first ball, smashing a straight delivery to the mid-wicket boundary with a flourish; a man in form indeed. He and skipper Stuart Jones picked the bad ball beautifully to hit regular boundaries, until Jones got bowled by a beauty for 20. Ed Sherriff looked good before also getting bowled by a good ball, Gavin Flower causing problems for the Barry batsmen. In form Ben Irons continued his run with 28 before Barry started to lose wickets including Lanagan for a superb 87; his fourth consecutive league half century. Neil Mantell batted well for 25 not out but he ran out of partners as Barry reached a fine score of 221 all out in 45 overs.

Ajaz Khan and Mantell opened the bowling for Barry and had Great Western in trouble early with a wicket apiece. Jones was introduced and bowled a superb tight spell of 2-30 from his 12 overs, Andrew Ferguson bowled tightly, and once the dangerman Kevin Williams went and Great Western were 52-5, the writing was on the wall and the fat lady clearing her throat. Great Western shut up shop to try and claim the not out points at the end, but the returning Khan (4-16 from 10 overs) and Mantell (4-28 from 9 overs) had other ideas and the pre-match bowling and fielding practice paid off with a fantastic maximum point win as Great Western were bowled out for 144, losing by 77 runs. Jamie Keir was again magnificent behind the stumps, and Barry moved up into third in the table after hearing news that local rivals Dinas Powys had been thrashed by Llantwit Major.

Many Thanks to Richard ‘Nipples’ Lanagan Esq. for sponsoring the days match ball.
