Barry Wanderers 1st XI vs Llantwit Major Cavaliers XI

On Saturday the Wanderers entertained Llantwit Cavaliers at Hayes Point. With the sun shining the visiting captain won the toss and elected to bat. Dave Morgan and Captain James Hassett opened the bowling. With a winter of nets under his belt and going into the game with confidence Hassett began to wonder if all the practice had been worth it, as he struggled to find his line and length! Morgan however found the right spot from ball one and was rewarded with two wickets in an opening spell of 6-0-27-2 including the important wicket of Griffiths. Hassett turned to debutante Evan Davies who didn’t disappoint, bowling a fantastic spell, beating the edge of the bat on many occasions and returning figures of 6-2-16-2. Wickets continued to fall at the other end, with Ajaz Khan knocking back the middle stump twice in a spell of 4-0-15-2 and the ever improving Rob Tucker taking two wickets for twelve runs. Llantwit youngster Sam Pickford batted well and topped scored with an innings of 16. The Llantwit innings came to an end in the 31st over with the score on 109.

The Wanderers opening partnership of Peter Coleman and Mike Burson started brightly hitting 24 off the first 3 overs. The score moved along to 42 before Coleman was bowled by Wood for 7. This brought Pasha Nadeem to the crease but it wasn’t long before he became Wood’s second victim being bowled for only 6. Four overs later Wood struck again, gaining the wicket of Paul Swannick leaving the Wanderers 66-3. With 3 wickets falling in 6 overs and Wood bowling tightly (finishing with figures of 10-4-14-3) the Wanderers needed a partnership to steady the ship. This came from Burson, playing his first game for the club, and Anthony Barratt. The pair batted intelligently, knowing there was no rush, as they had plenty of overs in hand. With the help of some wayward bowling the Wanderers moved to within 4 runs of victory before Burson chipped a drive to cover and was caught for 27. Hassett and Barratt (14no) knocked off the remaining runs to give the Wanderers a 6 wicket victory.
