Barry Wanderers 1st XI vs Newport 3rd XI

On a blustery day Barry traveled to Newport in the hope of claiming their first league win of the season. Newport won the toss and decided to bowl against a strong looking Barry top order. Gareth Lanagan continued his fantastic start to the season hitting the bad ball mercilessly and along with Ed Sherriff amassed a fine first wicket stand of 90 in just 22 overs. Sherriff fell LBW, then Newport introduced young James Aston who bowled a fine spell of off-spin bowling taking three big wickets before having to come off with injury. Lanagan fell for a superb 75, and Barry were in a bit of trouble at 139-6 until Andrew Ferguson and Andy Fenton consolidated the innings, then smashed 48 off the last 6 overs to reach a decent total of 217 for 7 from the 45 overs.

Ajazz Khan opened the bowling for Barry and had an immediate effect with a wicket in his first over. Andy Fenton at the other end proved a fine foil for Khan with superb line and length and was rewarded with a catch behind off Keir in his second over. Khan worryingly limped off after his third over, bringing Ferguson into the attack who also struck in his second over leaving Newport wobbling on 26-3 off 9 overs. A decent partnership followed but the result never looked in doubt, and when skipper Jones and the returning Khan entered the fray again they destroyed the middle and lower order to skittle Newport out for 83 with Khan finishing on 5-17 from 10 overs.

A good win for Barry with maximum points and a confidence boost going into tomorrows game against Blackwood in the Welsh Cup second round.
