Barry Wanderers 1st XI vs Newport 3rd XI

Barry entertained Newport on a scorching day at Hayes Point on a new wicket which was damp after the torrential rain on Friday. Barry won toss and decided to field, young Krunel Patel and Andrew Ferguson opening the bowling. Patel bowled very well with his inswingers causing the Newport batsmen problems; his patience paid off in his third over bowling opener Aldred through his gate. Ferguson was also bowling with good line and length, and was rewarded with two wickets in his opening spell, both caught at cover after frustrating the batsmen. Skipper Stuart Jones decided to take the pace off the ball and Ben Irons and Anthony Barratt contained Newport very well, Jones himself then came on to bowl his twelve overs taking 3-42 along the way. Irons took 2-34 in a tight spell, then Ferguson came on to polish off the tail, ending with figures of 4-31. Newport were bowled out for 153 in the 44 th over, with the wicket drying out all the time.

After tea, (many thanks to Linda and Gladys) Jones and Gareth Lanagan opened the batting for Barry and took the initiative hitting anything loose to the boundary. Lanagan reached his sixth league half century of the season in just the twelfth over, before being caught plum in front for a superb 70. Jones went on and pummeled the change bowlers to finish on 55 not out, Sherriff a grafted 2 not out.

Barry won by 9 wickets in the 26 th over, a fine all round performance and back to winning ways.
