Barry Wanderers 1st XI vs Pentwyn 1st XI

Barry made the long trip up to Pentwyn to kick off their league season with high hopes for a successful season. With last minute withdrawals, the team was not as strong as it could have been, but with the omission of two of Pentwyn’s finest players Barry were still confident of a good start.

Skipper Stuart Jones won the toss and chose to bat on a lovely warm day. Gareth Lanagan and Ed Sherriff gave Barry a terrific start putting on 90 in 16 overs following the early departure of Anthony Barratt, and were cruising along until a collapse to 146-5 slowed the Wanderers down. Lanagan fell for a fine 54 and the Wanderers were in disarray but managed to scrape to 190-8 off their 45 overs with some patient batting from Andrew Ferguson who finished on 31no.

It looked a decent total on a ‘playful’ wicket but young Sam Saunders made it looked like a bowling green with some quite brilliant cricket strokes which saw him make 90 before being stumped off Barratt. At 180-2 the scoreline looked embarrassing for Barry but three quick wickets gave Barry some dignity eventually losing by 5 wickets.
