Barry Wanderers 2nd XI vs Bridgend 4th XI The Wanderers entertained Bridgend IV’s on a cloudy day at Hayes Point ground. Skipper Ellis lost the toss and the Wanderers were put into bat on a damp wicket. Dave Smith and Paul George were soon both back in the hatch with only 9 on the score board. This brought Swannick Snr and Swannick Jnr together at the crease and their experience steadied the ship. A good middle order rear guard took place with both Whiting and Ellis continuing their good form to score 20 and 25 respectively. Chrissy “Homer” Barnes bludgeoned a quick fire 23 and Ben Collins, starting his first 2 nd X1 game of the season also hit some useful late runs to take the Wanderers to a satisfactory score of 170 for 7 off their allocated 45 overs. After a glorious tea the Wanderers set about defending their total in resolute style. Opening bowlers Collins and Diddy Dave Morgan were as tight as Grant Cole’s wallet conceding 29 runs off 20 overs and taking 5 wickets in the process. This put the Bridgend team well on the back foot and behind the run rate required. Ashton entered the fray at the Hospital end and he continued to tie the batsmen down taking 4 wickets in the process. With Sanders bowling effectively at the other end the game was all but over. However, as last partnerships so often do the willow was swung and connected with, a couple of catches were dropped in the deep until the inevitable happened and Swinford was bowled by Ashton to wrap up the game and seal a Wanderers win by 97 runs.
