Barry Wanderers 1st XI vs Cardiff Cavaliers XI

The Wanderers entertained the Cardiff Cavaliers with the ground and surroundings looking in immaculate fettle. A huge credit must go to groundsman Tony Swannick who produced a belter of a wicket. A good crowd gathered in the glorious sunshine and it was a surprise when the away captain called a round head and elected to field which was indeed a Cavalier decision.

Jamie Keir & Paul Swannick opened the batting for the Wanderers and they set about the bowling with venom. The 1st wicket going down in the 8th over with the score on 40. Keir continued to hit the boundary board at regular intervals until suffering a harsh lbw decision on 37. With “Doc” Finlay playing an entertaining innings and looking set for a 50 before a rash swipe at a long hop saw him bowled. It was now time for consolidation and Barnes & Ellis using their experience added 34 runs before Barnes was caught & bowled off the bowling of Adams. Tony Swannick batting down the order also provided some useful middle order runs before being bowled for 18. It was left to Pasha Nadeem to increase the run rate taking the Wanderers over 200 and Ellis also reaching his 50 to see the Wanderers to a score of 223 – 7 off 40 overs.

Krunal Patel bowled a tight spell from the tree end on his home debut and was unlucky not to get a wicket with his inswingers. Moggsy Morgan was as miserly as ever bowling a nice line and length and getting the opener caught behind to a good catch. Marchant and Steadman then set about their work and this led to a sloppy 10 overs in the field from the Wanderers. However, with Ashton being brought into the attack the tide turned and a succession of wickets followed notably the top order of Steadman, Adams and Marchant. Once the top order were whittled out it was left to Ashton to use his guile and variety to spark a middle order collapse with the Cavaliers going from 66 for 2 to 101 – 8. Some late order resistance temporarily halted the slide but the result was not in doubt and with Pasha Nadeem getting the last man out for his debut Wanderers wicket the Cavaliers fell 93 runs short of their target.
