Barry Wanderers 2nd XI vs Great Western 2nd XI Hayes Point, Sully
The Wanderers entertained Great Western at the Hayes Point ground hoping to do the double and get a win in memory of Shambo. Both sides were geared up for a big game of cricket with plenty at stake for both sides.
Wanderers skipper Ellis lost the toss and was put into bat by Tony Williams. Although it was a well overdue glorious sunny day the wicket was still drying and would proved very tricky to bat on. After some tight opening bowling Gary Whiting tried to flick the ball off his pads and was caught at mid wicket for 0. This brought George to the wicket and the two vets of George and Swannick consolidated and played cautiously. The score was beginning to tick along nicely until George looped one up for an easy caught and bowled. The 2 Swannicks, not for the 1st time steadied the ship and in particular Swannick Jnr played an excellent innings in the circumstances. Swannick Snr departed for a hard working 21. Skipper Ellis didn't hand around for long and it was left to Paul Swannick to anchor the innings and take the Wanderers score to 142 all out, top scoring with 40.
It was going to very tough for the Wanderers with a depleted bowling attack. Paul George and Mike Ashton manfully stuck to the task and aided with support from Chris Sanders they had Great Western struggling at 30 - 3. However, they did not reckon for Great Westerns middle order batsmen who carted the Wanderers change bowlers around the ground both scoring unbeaten fifties to take them past the wanderers total with plenty of time to spare.
With the weather looking set fair for the coming week the Wanderers will be expecting another stern test at Hayes Point as they entertain Pencoed and hoping for revenge for their defeat earlier in the season.
