Barry Wanderers 2nd XI vs Lisvane Whiteheads 4th XI

The Wanderers entertained Lisvane Whiteheads in a league fixture which at 9am looked very unlikely to go ahead but a pitch inspection at 11.30am gave the game the go ahead. Wanderers skipper Ellis lost the toss for the 2 nd week running and the opposition skipper put the Wanderers into bat hoping to use the damp conditions to good effect.

This decision seemed a good one when Smith missed a straight one with only 2 on the board to leave the Wanderers reeling. However, not for the 1 st time this season the Wanderers rearguard came to the fore and Gary Whiting and Tony Swannick provided a batting masterclass on a difficult batting track and took the Wanderers to 129 before Swannick departed for an excellent 36 which was worth double that in value. Whiting continued to display an awesome array of shots and his maiden fifty soon became a maiden 100 in double quick fashion. Whiting, who had been threatening a big innings for a while finished on 129 not out, 7 runs short of the club record, and had late order assistance from Barnes and Ellis to enable the Wanderers to post an extremely respectable 227 for 4 off their 45 overs.

With the outfield and wicket now dry it was by no means a formality that a win was on the cards as Lisvane had by far the better batting conditions. Krunal Patel and Dave Morgan opened with unerring accuracy and provided a very useful opening bowling attack. Patel was in particular causing havoc and sent Allen and Haincock back to the pavilion bowling them both with two cracking inswingers. The youngster who will be spending a month in the winter on a cricketing academy is looking the part and getting better with every game he plays. Slow bowlers Ashton and Sanders then continued to peg the Lisvane batters down and Ashton came up trumps with 3 quick wickets including the dangerous Roberts for 39. T. Swannick and C. Sanders both joined the party to leave Lisvane reeling on 127 for 9 and it was only stubborn resistance from M. Dunn who finished on 14 not out that stopped the Wanderers claiming maximum points. However, a 97 run victory claimed 25 points for the hosts and they now move onto an intriguing top of the table clash with Penarth IV’s next Saturday at the Hayes Point ground.
