Barry Wanderers 2nd XI vs Pencoed 2nd XI The Wanderers traveled to Pencoed to take on a side placed in mid table and had beaten Blaengarw the previous week. With the sun beating down on an open field skipper Ellis did not enter the popularity stakes after losing the toss and being put into the field for 45 overs of hard graft. The Pencoed openers set about the Wanderers attack in adventurous fashion and scored 40 off the first 10 overs. It looked like it would be a long old afternoon but credit to the Wanderers who stuck to their task. Dave “Seven Bellies” Morgan was his usual accurate self bowling military medium and this allowed him to snaffle the 1 st wicket with wicketkeeper George taking a smart catch. The experienced duo of Keith Redford and Graham Davies took the score onto 118 before Davies was bowled by Ashton, and as so often happens another wicket instantly followed with Chris Sanders expertly running out Redford . Pencoed continued to score runs but not at a rapid rate and with wickets tumbling and good outfielding Pencoed finished on 166 for 8 off their allocated 45 overs. The pick of the bowlers being Tony Swannick, Mike Ashton and Dave Morgan. Looking to reply in a positive fashion the Wanderers suffered an immediate setback with Whiting being bowled for a duck. This setback brought Paul Swannick to the wicket and he along with Dave Smith ground out a 37 second wicket partnership. However once Swannick departed this sparked a mini collapse with Waterhouse taking the wickets of both Swannicks and Rob Tucker for a fine return catch. With the Wanderers behind the required run rate it was time to re-evaluate the innings and Offer and Ellis looked to nudge and nurdle the runs using the big outfield and finding the gaps accordingly. This was working until Offer was adjudged LBW to Davies on 13. Sanders then came to the wicket and the momentum was continuing to grow until he sweeped one too many and picked out the fielder. Ellis then skied the next ball as he attempted in vain to go for broke and this left the last wicket pair of Ashton and Morgan to valiantly attempt to score the runs needed but after Ashton was given LBW to Jenkins for 6 the game was over and the Wanderers fell 25 runs short of their target finishing on 142 all out and taking 7 points in total.
