Barry Wanderers 2nd XI vs Pencoed 2nd XI

Wanderers gain vital victory in quest for promotion

The Wanderers entertained Pencoed looking to avenge a defeat in a closely fought game earlier in the season. With the sun out and the wicket looking in good nick the home skipper won the toss and elected to bat and get some runs on the board.

It was the steady opening duo of Whiting and Swannick Snr who walked to the crease and set about with a solid start. Whiting was looking good for a few runs before holing out to mid off with a leading edge for 10. This brought Paul George to the wicket and along with Swannick they proceeded to both play beautifully coping with anything that Pencoed threw at them (including a couple of beamers). With great skill and aplomb they took the score to 134 before Swannick fell for an invaluable 44. George coasted to a majestic 50 and with Swannick Jnr who continued his fine form took the score past 170 before Swannick departed for 29 which included 2 big sixes. Barnes and Ellis departed swiftly and it was left to Sanders and George to take the score to 217 for 5 off their allocated 45 overs and with that maximum bowling points.

Pencoed’s reply started slowly and continued like that throughout their entire innings. Behind the run rate from the off due to tight opening spells from Dave Morgan and Paul George the Pencoed openers seemed happy to bat the whole innings with the aim of gaining batting points. After 15 overs the score was 25 and after 30 overs the score was 65 and the game all but over. This is not to detract from the Wanderers bowling and fielding which was outstanding. Change bowlers Ashton and Sanders continued the good work and both picked up 2 wickets apiece as the Pencoed batters toiled in the heat. Paul George came back at the end and picked up another 2 wickets to give the Wanderers a deserved victory and keep them in the promotion hunt with 3 games to go. Pencoed ended their innings on 111 for 6 with Pencoed’s skipper Graham Davies batting the entire 45 overs for 48 runs. The Wanderers picking up 24 points in an 106 run victory. The Wanderers now travel to Lisvane in another crucial game.
