Barry Wanderers Sunday XI vs Cynon Valley Wanderers XI

Cynon Valley arrived at Hayes Point on a bright sunny day with both teams looking forward to a good game of cricket following weeks of dismal weather.

Cynon won the toss and decided to bat, a decision that would have a huge impact on the day. Young Andrew Finlay was given the new ball for Barry, and bowled superb line and length taking two wickets in his spell, aided by the returning James Hassett who also took a wicket in a miserly spell. At 15-3, Cynon were wobbling, giving first team wicketkeeper Jamie Keir a chance to shine with the ball. An ‘entertaining’ spell yielded figures of 4-2-33-1, Keir surely pushing for a bowl next Saturday. Second team skipper Mark Ellis bowled at the tree end and took three quick wickets to end the hopes of a Cynon revival and at 68-9, an early afternoon in the pub looked in the cards. Ian Finlay and the returning Andrew Fenton bowled very well and it was eventually Fenton who took the last wicket to leave the Wanderers the task of chasing 94.

After a wonderful tea in the sun, first team skipper Stuart Jones and vice skipper Andrew Ferguson took to the crease and Jones immediately showed his intent, smashing the first ball of the innings high into the trees for six, winning two pints along the way. The fifty partnership came after just five overs, Ferguson still yet to get off the mark but enjoying watching Jones hitting the boundary at every opportunity. The winning runs came in the eleventh over, with Jones finishing on 57no, Ferguson 21no; Barry winning by 10 wickets.
